Start of construction of Swimming Pool the Krommerijn

Construction of the new swimming pool Krommerijn in Utrecht has started! On Thursday, September 8th the official start signal will be given by alderman Rinda den Besten. The new pool, designed by Jeanne Dekkers Architectuur in collaboration with Wehrung Architecten, is a more permanent, durable and stylish solution for the outdoor pool. A openable, air-filled plastic roof with high insulating qualities will make the pool usable even in winter.

The inspiration for the new pool was the particular location of the bath at the Oude Rijn (Old Rhine), a place with distinct traces of the Roman period. The Romans made the ritual of bathing an important part of society: it seemed an appropriate ambiance for the new pool. The design provides for a walkway around the pool with columns that support the openable roof. This walkway can also serve as seating at competitions. The structure and dimensions of the building are especially visible in the bold, distinctive look of the architecture. The swimming pool will become an attractive and pleasant place to stay where people from Utrecht and beyond, young and old, will love to come to recreate and work out.
