Cooperative undertaker 'De Laatste Eer' is developing a new crematorium in Delft. An unusual assignment, not only because of the programme, but also because of the location on the edge of town amid the peaceful greenery of Iepenhof cemetery. The design is based on the farewell ritual and the corresponding journey through the building. It provides two independent mirror routes, so two funeral services can take place simultaneously. A bridge over water and a gate lend access to the building. The view is of nature, greenery and sky. The foyer is light and transparent and overlooks a serene garden. Next is the condolence room, a private space with regulated views and coloured light from above. The viewing room is shaped like a capsule at the heart of this space. The auditorium beyond is a soft and round space that envelops the mourners like a coat. Here, the casket is displayed under a skylight. The auditorium is the location of the last farewell and overlooks the cemetery, the trees and the sky. The farewell route ends here, and the circle of life is complete.
