Jeanne Dekkers Architecture designed an apartment building beautifully located on the waterfront, in a new residential area in Cuijk, consisting of 60 flats for the elderly, 3000 m² of commercial space with related functions and an underground car park.
The volume stacks up in height and in this way relates to the surrounding buildings. The kinks in the facade provide an articulation of the building mass and a dynamic foreshortening of the perspective. The kinks also shorten the galleries at the rear of the building and ensure that all the flats have a view of the water. They also generate an attractive route from the main entrance to each flat.
The open portal in the volume connects the site behind and the existing houses visually with the water. It also leads naturally to the main entrance of the commercial space on the ground floor. The elongated, horizontal facade on the lakeside underscores the building’s ship-like image and contrasts with the vertical brick piers on the gallery side. In combination with the warm red brick this affords a striking appearance, providing an asset for the neighbourhood.
