centrum Sittard

The city of Utrecht is the owner of swimming pool De Krommerijn, Utrecht’s only open-air swimming pool. In the summer, it is run as an openair swimming pool; in the winter it is covered by an inflatable hall and used for swimming practice. Utrecht now faces an exceptional task: to renovate and roof in swimming pool De Krommerijn. For this assignment, Wehrung Archi¬tects and Jeanne Dekkers Architecture jointly create a design. Our design for the swimming pool aims to realize an attractive location that the people of Utrecht and the surrounding area enjoy to visit: a good place to spend time, be at leisure and exercise, which targets a broad audience, from children to adults. This vision of ours was inspired by the Romans and the Dutch Water Line in Utrecht’s past. In the Roman period, rituals concerning bathing and sauna visit featured largely in society and this was just the kind of atmosphere we thought would fit the new pool. It has as characteristically robust a look as the Dutch Water Line fortresses.
